About Crop Brief
Crop Brief is a practical reference library built to help home gardeners compare growing requirements before they plant.
Our purpose
Gardening advice is often scattered across seed packets, local guides, and long articles. Crop Brief brings the most useful planning details into one consistent profile so readers can quickly understand timing, sunlight, spacing, containers, water, and harvest expectations.
The site supports general home-garden planning. It does not replace local advice or promise a particular result. Climate, soil, weather, cultivar, and day-to-day care can all change how a crop performs.
What we publish
The library currently covers 50 vegetables, herbs, and fruits, with additional profiles added over time. Each completed profile includes a crop overview, planting timing, space and container guidance, growing conditions, harvest context, and answers to common questions.
Measured planning fields are kept separate from explanatory writing. When a value is a range, the page keeps it as a range rather than presenting a false single answer.
How profiles are prepared
Crop parameters are organized into a shared dataset, checked for internal consistency, and then turned into original, crop-specific explanations. The consistent page structure makes crops easier to compare while keeping the cautions relevant to each crop.
Before a profile is released, required fields, units, links, page structure, and obvious conflicts are checked. Existing pages may be revised when clearer evidence or wording becomes available.
Sources and attribution
Our reference work draws primarily on publicly available horticultural material from University of Minnesota Extension, Cornell gardening and Cooperative Extension resources, NC State Extension, Utah State University Extension, and the USDA PLANTS Database. Images are stored locally and originate from Unsplash or Wikimedia Commons under their applicable terms.
Sources are used to cross-check crop-level planning ranges. Crop Brief is not affiliated with or endorsed by any university, public agency, seed supplier, or image platform named on the site.
Corrections and updates
If you find a questionable value, broken link, unclear explanation, or attribution issue, email [email protected] with the crop name, exact passage, and a reliable supporting source.
We review specific, well-sourced correction requests and update content when the evidence supports a change. A submitted suggestion does not guarantee an edit.
Funding and editorial independence
Crop Brief may display advertising to support hosting, research, editing, and maintenance. Advertising does not determine the crop values or editorial conclusions shown in a profile.
